Supporting Learning While Ensuring Psychological Safety
Presented by: Tanya Richmond, MSW, LCSW, Senior Partner, Support Development Associates (SDA)
Earlier this year we asked providers and the workforce to complete assessments that would help us understand where organizations are currently at with their recruitment and retention efforts. The aggregate results highlighted key themes with support and supervision being areas of interest.
There’s no disputing that Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are satisfied with the kind of work they do. In fact, 91% of DSPs who responded to the assessment stated this was the case.
However, the support they receive while engaging in this satisfying, yet sometimes challenging, work may need to be more closely examined. Even though 95% of DSPs responded that they have access to their supervisor, 22% say they have no supervision. 24% of organizations who completed the assessment aren’t really sure how much supervision DSPs are receiving.
Is simply having “access” enough to feel supported and engaged?
About the Webinar
In this webinar we’ll look at how engaging and learning from the workforce matters. A commitment to system-wide learning will ensure that all stakeholders thrive. There needs to be a virtuous cycle of effort, learning, and acting on the learning. But learning cultures require that other attributes are present. First there needs to be what Adam Grant describes as psychological safety. It must be OK to try and not be successful. It must be OK to share the learning from less-than-successful efforts. Additionally, there needs to be accountability, respect, and trust.
