Recovering from the Big Quit: Stabilizing the workforce through respectful and psychologically safe workplaces.
Lakeesha Brown, Vice President Human Resources, UConn Health
From pandemic panic to post-pandemic burnout, the workplace has changed with lightning speed over the last three years. Employees’ expectations of the employer have changed- demanding work-life balance; higher wages; and attention to diversity, equity and inclusion. Employers have experienced these demands compounded by a shrinking candidate pool and expectations that are difficult to address in a 24/7 work environment. In this session, we will discuss the preconference theme: HR A key partner in aligning strategy, people and culture and how we can move from being paralyzed by insurmountable demands to building a solid foundation that facilitates psychologically safe and respectful workplaces.

The State of New York's Workforce
Melinda Mack, Executive Director, NYATEP
In this historic period of low unemployment, job seekers with multiple barriers—including those with disabilities—are at risk of being left behind. Approximately, 65 percent of working-age people with disabilities in New York City are either unemployed or not in the labor force (compared with 26 percent for those without disabilities). New York ranks 40th nationally when it comes to employment for these communities.
The COVID-19 pandemic has permanently reshaped America’s labor market and worsened existing inequalities for women, people of color and young adults; and altered what people want from work. This means our under-funded and often siloed workforce development systems need to be ready for the coming wave of New Yorkers needing to adapt their skills, all while automation and technological advancements continue to transform the labor market. Melinda Mack, from NYATEP, will discuss the future of workforce development and what we should be considering, potential resources and partnerships, and federal & State policy.
