Consent and People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

The rate of sexual abuse among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are staggering. This population is 7 times more likely to be abused than the general population and women with I/DD are 12 times more likely to be abused. Many of these individuals don’t receive sexuality education that is cognitively accessible to them and for many other reasons this puts them at risk. In order to change the statistics, there are many areas where educators can make a difference including understanding how to work with this population and effective ways to teach consent education to people with I/DD.

• Explore strategies for teaching consent to this population
