Diagnosing mental health conditions in people with IDD can be quite challenging.

People with I/DD are often put on psychotropic medications, some of which may have serious side effects, without a specified mental illness diagnosis just to treat behaviors that are deemed problematic.

With verbal communication frequently limited, clinicians must rely more on observation and the reports of others to help identify behaviors that could be an indication of an underlying mental health or medical condition rather than a mental health condition.

This presentation will focus on different signs and indicators of mental health conditions that can aid in proper diagnosis and treatment for people with IDD, and identify common behaviors that are caused by underlying medical conditions that may mimic mental health symptoms.

Following this Webinar, Attendees will...

be able to contrast the difference between mental illness diagnoses in people with IDD and without IDD.
be able to explain different approaches to diagnosing various mental health disorders in people with IDD.
be able to demonstrate awareness of potential medical or dental underlying uses of behavioral issues to reduce misdiagnosis of a mental health condition that could caused by a treatable medical one.
be able to relate the dangers of polypharmacy.
be able to relate good prescribing habits relating to psychotropic drugs.
