Research indicates that some populations are unequally burdened by Alzheimer’s dementia, including people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). As the I/DD population ages the risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia increases. Because of this, caring for those living with I/DD and dementia can become challenging. Understanding the changes that are occurring, adjusting expectations and filling a toolbox full of practical tips and techniques will ensure the person’s full participation in a meaningful and purposeful life.

The Alzheimer’s Association partners with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and The Golisano Foundation in providing support to people living with I/DD and dementia, their family caregivers and service providers through our programs and services; now being offered virtually. Our ultimate goal is to assist the provider system in ensuring a meaningful and purposeful life for the person living with I/DD and dementia, providing them with the best care possible and the opportunity to age in place.
