The Vocational Engagement Model (VEM) presents the intersection of different disciplines to rethink job placement services as they are offered to people with disabilities today. The model connects aspects of the medical, educational and rehabilitation disciplines in a process to improve the skills of the people who seek assistance to find and keep employment.
The VEM transcends the traditional 4 tiered format for Job Placement services, as defined by State VR systems. It is designed to manage the job placement service and exemplify cost optimization and job seeker engagement.

About the Presenter: Nicholas A. Villani, President and CEO, has worked in the field of vocational training and employment for people with special needs since 1982. He has administered programs, written grants, designed programs including supported employment and transition for individuals with disabilities. While in the not-for-profit sector, he developed some of the earliest programs for individuals with autism in employment. While working with students and adults with high functioning autism, he developed one of the first in the nation College Support Program for Students with Asperger’s Syndrome. As a presenter, he has trained hundreds of professionals in the field of vocational services across the United States. As an administrator, he oversaw the operations of services in the field of transition, vocational rehabilitation for several agencies. He was an Adjunct Professor at Dowling College from 1997 to 20105 teaching masters level “Transition Services for Students in Special Education” for graduate students becoming special education teachers. In 2005 Nicholas founded Career and Employment Options or CEO which started with two school districts and has grown to over 40 staff serving fifty school districts on Long Island and Westchester. In 2008 CEO was one of the first for-profit agencies to receive an ACCES-VR contract for a multitude of services including Job Placement Services. |
This 1.5 day training will define for its participants how to fundamentally restructure job placement services in order to achieve the following goals:
- More fully engage the job seeker and their family and or circle of support in the entire job search process.
- Establish a "career quest" agreement on how services will be provided and establish the level of commitment and required activities for both the job seeker and Career Consultant.
- Learn how to use a series of assessments instruments that will assist the Career Consultant to best counsel the job seeker with use of meta cognitive skills.
- Manage the Job Placement Service both structurally and fiscally for cost optimization by -
- front loading of services to minimize time from referral to placement thereby creating better personal engagement while managing the hours towards profitability
- restructure sessions with job seeker for optimal content review
- Learn how to establish the Vocational Engagement Team to create peer support systems and maximize staff skill and supports, not unlike "rounds" in the medical model.
The Vocational Engagement Model is the evolutionary change in the provision of job placement services. It offers staff using it the "guardrails" for them to work within while retaining their own creativity. The end result is total personal engagement, management of the job placement process with true cost optimization.
